MEET THE MAKER: THE BUILDER BEHIND THE VISION
INTERVIEW BY GIORGIO D'ALBANO
45th episode:
ROBERTO CERUTI a.k.a. BRICKUP
Where are you from and what did you study?
First of all, hello everyone and thank you for the invitation to this chat.
I was born in a small town in the Bergamo area, but I have been living on Lake Maggiore (Varese) for 20 years. After graduating as a surveyor, I specialized in Analysis and Programming
What do you do, what job do you do now?
After working around the world as a tourist entertainer in holiday villages, today I deal with the installation and management of air conditioning systems
What inspired you to become a LEGO builder?
My passion for these bricks began when I was a child, it wasn't a choice, but a consequence of the pleasure I had every time I spent time playing. Even today I don't consider myself a builder, but a slightly grown-up child who has a lot of fun
Where do you get inspiration for your creations?
As often happens I find inspiration in everything, in every moment. Creativity has always been a fundamental part of my life, so I am predisposed to this process every day... and every night!
What is your favorite LEGO work that you have built so far?
I can only say "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" for what happened with Jody Padulano, but my favorite work is always the next one... I want to raise the bar every time, I want to learn and improve in every aspect, MOC after MOC. For me it's a challenge, a passion, without having to prove anything to anyone, except to myself. I don't actually have a favorite MOC, because each one has different reasons and meanings... all very important to me
What has been the most complex challenge you have faced as a LEGO builder?
As I said before, every new work has new challenges, in every MOC I find more and more interesting motivations and stimuli. ADVENTURE IN THE JUNGLE certainly took me a lot of effort to make everything work in real water, without getting the boats stuck during the journey, and to make all the movements of the carousel work, from the ascent to the waterfall with the descent: it took several versions to get to the current version
Do you have a favorite technique or a special method that you use in your constructions?
I love the SNOT technique and the use of brackets and slopes. They are definitely my favorite elements
What themes or subjects do you like to explore the most in your creations?
For physical MOCs to bring to events I love representing the Disney theme: from Aladdin to Peter Pan. For all my other projects I have no preferences. All that matters is a creative stimulus that fascinates me, and the game starts!
What is the largest or most ambitious project you have ever made?
Definitely Neverland. 3 years of work and many sleepless nights.... hihihi...
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an expert LEGO builder?
But I am not an expert! I simply consider myself a builder who is fascinated by creativity, who is hungry for knowledge and curiosity. My desire to build is dictated by the fun and joy I feel with every completed project. If I really have to give advice to those who want to try to improve their techniques, it is to feed on the works of other AFOLs, those that fascinate you most for your tastes, to discover techniques and solutions adopted. You must be children who are amazed and astonished at every discovery and, with this spirit, then you will find your style... But obviously, the most important thing of all is to have fun!
