MEET THE MAKER: THE BUILDER BEHIND THE VISION

INTERVIEW BY GIORGIO D'ALBANO

44th episode: πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ MALTRUG
Where are you from and what did you study?
I was born in Russia but have been living in Germany for most of my life and I've studied mechanical engineering
What do you do, what job do you do now?
I'm making technical drawings for a small company and trying to make something profitable out of my at the moment hobby
What inspired you to become a LEGO builder?
I've been building around with bricks for as long, as I remember myself. I had quite a significant Hiatus from building during my studying time, but now got back to it
Where do you get inspiration for your creations?
From anywhere really, it can be something I saw, heard or read, it can be from me trying around with techniques or just an image I'm having in my head. What usually triggers a project is a combination of multiple of those things
What is your favorite LEGO work that you have built so far?
It has to be Altberg, my most recent build, although, what I'm currently working on, might take the spot. (having seen your Pantheon, you might like this one... feel free to edit out the text in the brackets)
What has been the most complex challenge you have faced as a LEGO builder?
Most complex challenge was definitely the rockwork. While I have a quite well defined algorithm of action, when designing buildings and ground. For example when you create a roof, you first make the bearing structure (aka the shape), then you choose your tiles (aka the surface) Then you create the edges, then you apply the colors (aka the texture) and then you add the effects like weathering, bird poop, etc. For rocks such an algorithm is much harder to find because there is much more variables and those influence each other in a way, that I personally still haven’t figured out yet
Do you have a favorite technique or a special method that you use in your constructions?
I've been raving about the Pythagorean triples recently. For Altberg they were the trigger, that I talked about before
What themes or subjects do you like to explore the most in your creations?
My parents are architects and I'm an engineer so technic and architecture are my comfort zones. But I'm looking to branch out, once I'm done with my current project
What is the largest or most ambitious project you have ever made?
My largest build yet is Altberg, but my current project is of a similar size, so might end up being bigger
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an expert LEGO builder?
Know/learn the basics. Use the tools, don't restrict yourself, unless it's for a challenge. Take your time. Experiment around. Find a good community. Try being conscious about the algorithms of action
